BOLIVAR
Work on dam
BOLIVAR: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working to improve safety at the Bolivar Dam in northern Tuscarawas County.
The effort includes clearing trees and brush, installing two dirt covers to reduce seepage and constructing a 450-foot storm sewer.
The work is being done by Massillon Construction & Supply LLC under a $3.75 million contract.
The Muskingum Conservancy Watershed District is paying the local share, $862,500.
The work is expected to take about two years.
Dirt will be hauled from nearby sites to construct the seepage blankets and a haul road to the downstream base of the dam will be constructed.
The dam, built in 1938, suffered extensive seepage during a January 2005 flood and required emergency repairs.
The area around the dam where Sandy Creek flows into the Tuscarawas River near the Stark-Tuscarawas county line is closed to the public until the work is completed.
The public road across the top of the dam might be closed periodically during the work.
